Really. Since when does Fort Worth live in the shadows of Dallas?

We happen to think the city does quite well on its own.

BestPlaces.net has released its 10 best cities to move to in America, and Fort Worth-Arlington was ranked No. 4.

It’s not that we don’t appreciate the plug, but in making the argument for its ranking, Bert Sperling with BestPlaces.net told CNBC.com that people who live in Fort Worth do so because: “It’s close enough to Dallas that you get all the amenities of a world-class city, from shopping to cultural events, but it’s cheaper.”

Huh?

Fort Worth has its own culture and its own shopping, thank you very much.

“Fort Worth is like the Rodney Dangerfield of the Dallas-Fort Worth area — It gets no respect,” Sperling said.

The ranking referenced Fort Worth’s growing art and culture, the city’s Botanic Garden and its zoo. Arlington, the item aptly pointed out, is where the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers play.

The cost of living in the 76034 area is nearly 14 percent lower than the national average, and the unemployment rate is well below the national average.

Fort Worth-Arlington followed Pittsburgh, Buffalo-Niagara Falls and Omaha, ranked No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Following Fort Worth-Arlington were Austin; Des Moines, Iowa; Madison, Wis., Minneapolis-St. Paul, Denver and Indianapolis.

Commercial real estate broker, developer and exotic car collector Ron Sturgeon is putting his Colleyville mansion up for lease when Super Bowl XLV is played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington in February.

It will cost a cool $45,000 for the week, or $8,500 a day with a four-day minimum stay. If you try it and like it, he has the house, at 1707 Cheek-Sparger Road, on the market for $2.8 million.

For an additional charge, he’ll add the use of his Ferrari 430, Lamborghini Gallardo or his Maserati Quattroporte.

Sturgeon said he recently leased the 14,000-square-foot house for a wedding event venue and it worked out so well, he’s decided to lease it for the Super Bowl.

Sturgeon said he’s had some nibbles. Potential lessees will have to fill out a tenant application and pass a credit check, he said.

The biggest screens

October was a strong month for GoVision, a seven-year-old Argyle company that leases giant TVs and video screens and trucks them to clients nationwide.

The company, which leased one of its 9-foot by 16-foot GoBig units to CBS Radio for World Series game-watching at J. Gilligan’s Bar and Grill in Arlington, did at least 56 events in October, more than any other month in the company’s history, owner Chris Curtis said. Last week, its screens were used as far east as a music festival in North Carolina and a benefit in Savannah, Ga.

“Our business has never been better,” Curtis said. “I can’t really answer why. We had been on a pretty sharp growth curve before the recession. Last year, we grew our top line, but our margin shrank. This year, since April, we have been on a pretty nice run.”

Curtis says his booking window has shortened noticeably, with more than 20 percent of his business done within 30 days of an event. His mobile screens start at $4,500 for the first day, plus travel expense.

“Sometimes, we’re the central piece of a function; sometimes we can be a good add-on,” Curtis said. Event promoters sometimes wait to determine levels of ticket sales and sponsorship, “then they add us,” Curtis said. “It’s the new norm.”

Locally, Curtis has deals to borrow large video screens from Cowboys Stadium and Texas Christian University’s Amon G. Carter Stadium, boosting his rental inventory and sharing revenue. With the Horned Frogs on the road now, Curtis has temporarily removed the stadium’s big screen and will reinstall it for the next home game. In the Cowboys’ off-season, Curtis removes several fan plaza video screens.

Curtis figures he has five or six competitors that, like GoVision, are national and can build big modular video walls using several screens. Another 30 operate on a smaller scale, he said.

“There’s a lot more availability in this equipment than there’s ever been,” he said.

College readiness

Fort Worth’s McDonald Community YMCA was one of 60 YMCA’s nationwide and one of only two in Texas to receive a Sam’s Club Giving Made Simple grant recently.

The McDonald Y, 2400 Berry St. 76034, said it will use the $15,000 grant for its College Application Program, which is designed to help teens prepare for college. CAP is a four-week program that walks local high school students through the process of applying to and preparing for college. The grant will provide an additional CAP session in the fall, allowing the program to be held twice this school year.

The program was started in 2006 by a Texas Christian University student in conjunction with the McDonald Y.

Through CAP, college students serve as mentors to high school students, and college professionals speak to high school students. The new grant has also added two college visits for high school students.

“This gift will help to support our ongoing efforts to bring the vital work we do with youth and teens to the forefront of our community,” said Sharron Spriggs, McDonald Community YMCA executive director.

Bombardier eyed

American Airlines could be eyeing a new type of plane.

While talking to analysts during its recent earnings call, American CEO Gerard Arpey was asked his opinion of the new Bombardier C-series aircraft.

“I think it is something definitely worth considering. That is an interesting airplane,” Arpey said. He added that the C Series could fulfill the carrier’s need for a narrow-body aircraft.

Bombardier’s C-series aircraft are more fuel-efficient planes that can carry 100 to 149 passengers and can be used on flights up to 2,950 nautical miles, the manufacturer says.

In its mainline operations, American currently only flies Boeing aircraft, having retired its Airbus fleet in 2009. Its regional subsidiary, American Eagle has a mix of ATR, Embraer and Bombardier aircraft.
